Hieroglyph Sketch represents a notable advancement in the field of Egyptology tools, offering a novel approach to learning and translating Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. This application addresses the initial challenge of glyph identification, which can be daunting given the over 7,000 existing glyphs and several hundred of them in common usage.

The core functionality allows users to project hieroglyphic inscriptions onto their screens using their device's camera. By tracing over each glyph with their finger, users activate sophisticated deep learning algorithms that continuously refine the identification of the glyph as more detail is provided. With consistent practice, the app demonstrates an approximate accuracy of over 80% for its top prediction and around 95% when considering the top five most probable glyphs among a set of the 500 most frequently used.

Even minimal or rough sketches typically enable the app to generate a small set of plausible glyph options. Users can then select the most fitting candidate, upon which additional information—such as pronunciation, Gardiner and MdC codes—is displayed. Confirmed glyphs can be added to a sequence, facilitating translation into English.

Hieroglyph Sketch includes an extensive internal dictionary comprising approximately 55,000 words and phrases, enhancing its utility for translation purposes. Its design permits fieldwork without reliance on internet connectivity, making it suitable for on-site archaeological or educational activities.
